Bettendorf has been settled since the Gallo-Roman period, including by the Rhine Franks. A descendant of this people, a certain Betto, gave the place its name. In the Middle Ages, the village had two castles, one of which was destroyed. On the ruins of the other, a baroque castle was built, which still exists today. The Auto-Pédestre starts in the village center and first guides you along the cycle path along the Sauer to Moestroff. Here it goes steeply uphill to climb the Schoofsbierg. It passes the Hirzenhaff and through the Gemengebësch. Shortly before the village entrance is a memorial stone to the 10th US Infantry Regiment. During the Battle of the Bulge, the Sauer valley was heavily contested. On January 10, 1945, the US soldiers managed to cross the Sauer. A strategically very important maneuver. Just like the soldiers back then, you must cross the Sauer to return to your starting point.

This path combines history and nature. First, you walk over the dyke along the Sauer. After a climb, you follow a former battle line from the Second World War, lined with rifle pits. The Niederberghaff ruin, past which you wander, also recalls past times. A good opportunity to explore the history of the Éislek in an investigative way.

Bettendorf Castle, nestled in Luxembourg's Nordstad, has a rich history that unfolds through centuries. Originally, in the 14th century, a castle stood in the plain near the river, serving as a stronghold and symbolizing local wealth. As times changed, the castle fell into disrepair, leading to the construction of the current baroque castle in 1728. This imposing structure, restored in 1962, stands as a testament to the region's medieval past. The baroque decorations of the corner tower, two lookouts, and a second tower are notable features, reflecting the architectural richness of its time. Unfortunately, the castle is not open to the public. Bettendorf itself has a history entwined with the rise and fall of noble families. Under Diekirch's control until 1330, it later fell under the stewardship of Hanry de Betandorffe by the Count of Luxembourg. By 1473, Bettendorf had become a sizable town with 48 households, a testament to its importance. In the 18th century, the d'Olimart family, followed by the von Puttkamer family, held sway over the entire Bettendorf. The castle, strategically positioned on the left bank, saw the demise of its predecessor in the 19th century. Today, Bettendorf Castle stands proudly, encapsulating the ebb and flow of centuries, echoing the tales of nobility, and symbolizing the enduring legacy of Luxembourg's medieval past.
