Esch-sur-Alzette

Esch-sur-Alzette Memorial Route

Despite the promise to maintain the neutrality of the Grand Duchy, German troops invaded Luxembourg on May 10, 1940. The occupiers under Gauleiter Gustav Simon pursue a dual goal: the Germanization of the population and the destruction of the Luxembourg state. Furthermore, he aimed at the suppression of the Jews. Resistance groups formed against these measures, whose resistance mainly consisted of propaganda and information measures, economic boycott, and helping conscientious objectors and politically persecuted people. The German occupiers responded to this resistance with interrogations, arrests, torture, and executions.
