In the area of the Born anticlinal fold, the groundwater horizon in the red sandstone has a higher level than the Sûre river, so that springs emerge. When the Sûre is low in water a source becomes visible whose water has a high salt and iron concentration. This water was used from the 16th (1587) to the middle of the 18th century (1749) for salt extraction by grading. Grading means that the salinity of the water from such a source is increased because the water evaporates naturally by wind and sun. Thus, heating energy is saved for the subsequent boiling of the brine. In the middle of the 18th century, the saline plant was shut down. Reasons for this could have been the emerging lower degree of saturation of the source on the one hand or political reasons on the other. According to legend, even today the little salt man appears at the spring around midnight and frightens passing hikers. Those who misappropriate foreign property are particularly tormented by the salt man. The Salzwaasserquell can be hiked via the Auto-pédestre Born.

This trail crosses the valley of the Girsterbaach close to the Burermillen after following the national “Sentier de la Basse Sûre” stage trail until Burerbësch. In some parts, you will have to cross the creek stepping on stones, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. At the end of the hike, the trail passes by Ramborn Cider Haff, Luxembourg’s first cider producer. The fruit used for the production of the ciders and perries comes from the surrounding orchards, which you have already had the chance to explore during your hike. At the shop of Ramborn Cider Haff, you can sample the various ciders and perries or take part in a tasting session.

The starting point of the hiking trail is located behind the school and sports complex near the village of Born an der Sauer. At the starting point of the path is the "Salzmännchegaart" with a geological barefoot path.

Apples from meadow orchards are turned into delicious cider: Luxembourg has a tradition of cider-making, but for many years it was forgot ten. The three founders of Ramborn Cider Haff aim to revive that tradition on their modern, renovated farm. Working with growers in the surrounding area, they use over 100 different apple varieties to make ciders that sometimes have unexpected flavours like vanilla or rum, and that have won several international prizes. The apples, pears and quince come from local orchards and are pressed on site; the various ciders, juices and sodas are available for visitors to taste and purchase. You can tour the cider farm and its meadow orchards. Our shop and visitor centre is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 14:00-18:00, or by appointment. Closed on public holidays Tours by reservation: 18 € per person, includes guided cider tasting (non-alcoholic 10 €). Tours last approximately 90 minutes. Only tasting : 10 €
