As part of the recon detatchment of the 5th US armored division, 1st US Army, entering the occupied territories of the grand duchy on 9th of september 1944, 2nd. Lt. Hyman Josefson and the platoon under his command were among the first US units liberating the country from nazi-german occupation; as a border town, Pétange was first along the liberation route. The retreating german Wehrmacht did not put up a tenacious defense, opting instead to take up positions along the Siegried line of defenses on the German border and only putting up a delaying action in some locations; the pullback was covered by artillery supporting the retreat. Josefsons platoon came under fire during the liberation, falling victim to the artillery strikes. His sacrifice, the first US combat casualty of World War II on luxembourgish soil, is commemorated in this memorial in Pétange, dedicated not only to Josefson, but also his unit and the liberating army at large. The memorial site, a small park alongside the road, contains a plaque and stone eternalizing Josefson and his unit, and also put the armored car of his recon platoon on display.

The south of the Grand Duchy was occupied like the rest of the country following the invasion of Nazi Germany on May 10, 1940; However, there were occasional battles as units of the French army occupied the area for advanced defense purposes. After the rapidly changing conditions in the following days however, they withdrew and so the entire Minett region, like the rest of the country, came under occupation by the III. Reich - a situation that would last until liberation on September 10, 1944. The region also played a role in the liberation in 1944, as the south of the country was the first to be liberated by the advancing Western Allies. Today there are a number of monuments honoring this historical moment, but also, for example, the "Liberty Road", the route of liberation that leads from Normandy, France, to Bastogne in Belgium. There are several memorial sites here in Pétange; at the train station, the railway employees who died during the war years are remembered. A monument is dedicated to the victims among the civilian population, as well as to individual members of the resistance, but also to the resistance against the III. Reich as a whole. Pétange also has a memorial site that commemorates a specific individual fate: the "Square Hyman Josefson" commemorates the first fallen US soldier who died during the liberation of the country.

At the beginning of the Auto-Pédestre, the hustle and bustle of the city can still be heard until you reach the quiet forests. Nevertheless, the route already has a lot to offer here: you walk along the "Kuer" brook through the city park and past fish ponds that invite you to take a short break. Afterwards, it goes into the surrounding forests of Pétange. The path runs close to the border with Belgium, which is why you repeatedly encounter border stones. In the forest, you also come across other brooks and ponds. Local products are available for purchase right by the wayside at the "Kuerbuttek" on rue Pierre Hamer, run by CIGL Pétange. Here you'll find only regional, seasonal, organically grown fruits and vegetables, as well as pickled and preserved goods such as fruit and jams, traditional workmanship items, vinegars and oils, and small decorative items, all handmade. A short drive away is the Brasserie Nationale in Bascharage, Luxembourg's largest brewery, which produces the Bofferding, Battin, and the organic Funck-Bricher beers. Here you can also book tastings, take a guided tour, dine at the "Braustuff" restaurant, and even stay overnight at the "Brauhotel" located directly across the street. The route is marked in both directions; follow the blue diamond on a white background.
