The first 25 km of this route lead leisurely and flat along a bike path along the Sauer and Moselle rivers. In Mertert, the route leaves the bike path and leads over a little-used side road through Manternach and the romantically wild valley of the Syr to Biwer. Then follows a long, steady climb to Consdorf. A fast descent takes you through wooded and rocky sections along a country road to Echternach. After an extra lap around Echternach Lake, the route ends after an eventful 59 km at the starting point in Echternach. In the abbey town, numerous cafés and restaurants invite you to a cozy conclusion of the route. Photo: © Mullerthal Cycling / Lutz

The approximately 9 km long loop offers the hiker a varied circular route with ever new aspects of the typical landscape at the Untersauer. Immediately after the start, unique old village paths (Peedercher) are traversed. Along the way, the hiker can enjoy great views of the Sauer valley. The highlight is the 360-degree panoramic view at the highest point of the hike. Beautiful are the tent-like beech forests as well as the dolomite rocks and their moss-covered scree fields.

Covered with moss, lichens and ferns, the "Gefale Leeën" - "fallen rocks" - line the path. The rocks are made of dolomite and have fallen from the great rock face. Water trickles through crevices in the dolomite and accumulates on the underlying marls, a clay-rich rock. For a long time, the rock faces of the dolomite slip down on the softened marls to the valley. Huge rock falls such as the "Gefale Leeën" can occur on the Dolomite rock walls, but they are rare. They are usually favoured by intense erosion of the slope by the Sûre. On the unsteady relief around the partially overgrown stone blocks, a canyon forest has developed. A canyon forest of linden, maple, beech and elm trees grows on steep slopes where the top layer of soil and rock is not stable. You can reach Gefale Leeën via Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail and the 8.7 km long local R8 hiking trail. Parking is available in Rosport and Steinheim.

Maison Viticole Roeder has been producing organic wine at the Sûre since 2011. They are farming a small but very fine vineyard area on the loop of the Sûre in Rosport, called “Hëlt”. The property is about 84 acres big, situated on a steep slope and surrounded by old dry stone walls. The perfectly aligned southeast slope with its mostly very old vines on loose limestone soils enjoys sunlight all day long. The microclimate privileges the vineyard. The vines are cultivated exclusively according to the guidelines of organic viticulture. Due to the old dry stone walls with an average gradient of 29.4% slope, the vineyard is managed manually. It is surrounded by orchids in an intact, peaceful countryside of a Natura 2000 area. A real picture book vineyard! There is a strong selection as the harvest is made by hand: only the sweet, healthy and ripe grapes are being harvested. The income is low in order to be able to offer a very fine wine to the consumer. The wine producer considers himself as an idealist as the habitats for many rare animal and plant species are being preserved. The interplay of nature and viticulture is very important. Each bottle of wine is a cultural and historical product. There are limited bottles of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and the oldest Elbling from Luxembourg. To this range is added the Crémant "Cuvée Kimmfrächen" a unique taste experience.
